BIRD HOUSE FOR THE LIVING DESERT

Palm Desert, CA
The Art Office was approached by the Living Desert Reserve in Palm Desert, CA to create a piece of sculpture that could double as a child’s play house. The created piece will be auctioned off at the Reserve’s annual gala fundraiser in Spring 2007. Built entirely from reclaimed 2x4’s, the egg form holds the metaphor for the birdhouse. Shaped smooth by hand on the exterior, the form is able to shift in the interior creating a desk, storage, and seating for kids inside. Supported by three conical metal legs, the approximately 1400# piece appears to float 6” off of the ground. Allowing light and color to enter into the piece, several colored acrylic tubes puncture the egg. A wooden skylight or stem creates height and strengthens the organic feel of the sculpture.
