Wayside Chapel and Columbarium

Palm Desert, CA
Built on the location of where Dwight D. Eisenhower's secret service would park his limousine during worship services, this prayer chapel and columbarium seeks to create a new, quiet, introspective space on the campus of the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church. With over 600 niches for the ashes of loved ones, the columbarium is an architectural metaphor for the loving, outstretched arms of Jesus Christ. The all-concrete structure of 5 battered walls is unified by a running bench and a concrete floor with inset bronze strips and engraved circles that trace the Christian life from birth to the Cross. Inset within the rear wall to the south, a 12' high cross of stacked glass will glow all day long welcoming both church members and the public to this sacred space.
