| HEADS |
||
Since 1994, heads have been a continuing theme of investigation through drawing. When Phillip Smith studied in Rome on RISD’s European Honors Program, he became fascinated with the photorealistic engravings of the deceased on columbarium niche stone faces and began recording them in his sketchbooks. Similar to the concepts of “The Space That I Can Touch” project, heads all have similar forms and parts, yet each is distinctly unique. It is the fusion of these similarities and differences that continues to fuel this investigation, as well as people’s ability to discern an abstract recording of the human face. |
