ONE VOICE - INDIO TEEN CENTER

Installed March, 2009, as the first commissioned public art sculpture in the City of Indio, “One Voice” seeks to physcially respresent the voice, lives, and aspirations of teens. Designed in collaboration with the Youth Advisory Council for the new Indio Teen Center, the youth discussed their desire for a seemingly chaotic form with an internal sense of tranquility. Additionally, they wanted something abstract, spontaneous, and raw with a sense of surprise and discovery. To this end, the 27’ high piece is comprised of 16 postive words, like "motivation", "community", and "empowerment," that are water-jet cut out of stainless steel. The sculpture angles out 18 degrees towards the street, inviting viewers to pass through the 8 angled steel columns to experience the "tranquil" diamond shaped center.
