This proposal for 5 acres in Joshua Tree seeks to merge with the desert landscape through a series of freestanding volumes shaded throughout the day with a hovering shade structure above. The JT House’s volumes confront the prevalence of the horizon line within the desert landscape through three approaches: The main living spaces reside on the horizon, a lookout tower pierces the shade structure and provides a view above the horizon, while an exterior gathering room is sunk into the earth below the horizon line. The ground between the four volumes is to be left desert landscaping, where the paths between the different volumes will be established through use, like animal trails between creosotes.
