As part of a series of proposals for public art at SunCal Companies' Marblehead residential project in San Clemente, CA, Shell was designed for a small public park within the project. Taking advantage of the park's sloping site and views to natural canyons below and the Pacific Ocean beyond, Shell seeks to interact with this surrounding environment and its viewer. Looking through the sculpture, the original, all natural view to the canyon and ocean are preserved, while all man-made structures on the periphery are blocked. The sounds and smells of the environment are channeled through the piece directly to the viewer, while the transforming structural ribs create a sense of movement and direction within the piece.
