THE SPACE I CAN TOUCH

This project began in the Chiesa de Gesu in Rome in 1994, where a series of drawings were created on the axis of symmetry using both hands simultaneously to record the left and right sides of the interior space of the church. With the hands inevitably wanting to lift off of the page, a three-dimensional recording began through light and photography. Just as the rectangular limit of that original paper in the church emerged, so then did the three-dimensional limit of my body. As my body described the space of the church, the church began to describe the space of my own body. This new space, which can be understood as the space that I (we) can touch, is the descriptive form of the human species with each new, but similar form revealing the intricacies and complexities of the individual person.
