The Tree House was originally conceived as a reaction to the ubiquity of wood dowels representing trees in architects’ models. The Tree House design asks if those representations could be actual steel “trees” that could support a house and create a new landscape or context for a house. Structurally, these upright, angled steel poles penetrate the house from top to bottom, supporting the elevated floor plane and roof. The walls between are infilled with triangulated panels expressing their folds as glass bands that allow light into the house and views out. An entry stairwell folds off of the house, hovering just above the ground, like a rope ladder, inviting the homeowner to step aboard.
